The job titles ‘Interior Decorator’ and ‘Interior Designer’ are often used synonymously – they sound similar and they are commonly mistaken for one another as they are within the same industry. However, these two jobs are different in several aspects.
Interior Designer
Interior designers match their client’s requirements with the functional layout of any given space – whether that be one room, an entire home, building or office. Typically they work on a building project from the start, sometimes even directly with the architect from the initial building stages. They look at how each room will be used and make sure they are designed practically for the client’s needs, including lighting, layout, sound and sometimes even down to the structure of a building.
Interior Decorator
Interior decorators focus on furnishings in a work or home environment. They use mainly furniture, accessories, textures, paint, fabrics, and colours to enhance the aesthetic appeal of a room, home or office. Ultimately they are concerned with creating or enhancing the visual appearance of their client’s space. Their job is to help bring a client’s dream to life, helping to decipher which style is desired – modern, country, contemporary, traditional, etc. – and bring that vision to life with furnishings and accessories. Decorators typically come in after a building is created and do not make alterations to a building’s structure or foundation.
